After a few months of constant tweaking, painting, decluttering and shopping (ahem), our living room refresh is almost complete. Phew. I'm a bit sad I didn't get any 'before' photos, but I got so impatient that I started painting before it even occurred to me to get my camera out. But, just to set the scene - the room was plain, magnolia and a little sad. It's a room which gets so much bright light, and is the heart of our home so it definitely deserved a refresh. I opted for white and grey, and am gradually adding in soft pastel pops of colour here and there too. (You can see the artwork which reflects this above our fireplace, here.) I'll do a more detailed overview of the room soon, once we've installed some new blinds and given the room its final polish.
One thing that we didn't have budget for was new carpets. Ideally I'd rip up our beige, dull carpet and attempt to salvage the floorboards underneath, or I'd lay some lovely wooden flooring. But since this wasn't a possibility, a new rug was the simplest option. I fell down the rabbit hole of rug window shopping, and was slightly bewildered by the many different options. Size? Material? Block colour or pattern? So. Many. Choices. Thankfully, I was rescued by the lovely Benuta, who kindly offered me a rug from their expansive collection. After having a good look through the many rugs they sell (I really liked the sisal rugs), I plumped for the Sloan rug in grey. Anyone who has been rug shopping will know that they can cost such a lot of money, but I was delighted to see how fair the Benuta prices are. Made from cotton and wool, in a flat weave, the Sloan rug was the perfect choice for our living room refresh.
Here's a little sneak peek I posted to my instagram page, just after it had arrived. I get extra points for matching my home furnishings to my footwear, right?
And here's a closer look at the rug, in pride of place in our living room...
It's been a little while since we've had the rug down, and I'm delighted to say it's still going strong. The colour is gorgeous, pile just as new and it's been super easy to clean and hoover as needed. Having never really had rugs before, with the exception of cheaper, smaller alternatives in my student house, I'd underestimated the impact they can have on a space. Our carpet of beige is brilliantly hidden, the pattern brings life to our living room and it feels like a full stop - a perfect finishing touch for the room.
Here's another wider shot, showing the rug and some of our other favourite living room pieces. Now looking at it, I definitely need something adding to the space by the door, the big empty wall needs filling! I'm so chuffed with how the colour and pattern of the rug blend beautifully with everything else, sort of tying it all together.
I'll be back soon with more living room updates!
